Red Flags – How to Prevent Being Fooled When Exploring Solar

Solar Purchases, Watch out for Red Flags

Time to Read: 7 minutes

Date: March 21, 2023

Every Texan needs to know what red flags to look out for on their solar journey. Not all solar power systems are designed the same. Like with any large purchase, there are ways to customize a solar power system. In many ways it’s like buying a car – it needs to be suited to what you need it to do. If you are hauling things around your property or farm, you’re going to need something with the space and power to do that. If you need something reliable that gets great mileage because you commute for work, then your priority is making sure it does that.

When it comes to solar power systems, some companies are like phony used-car salesmen in this example – selling you a system for a quick buck and not being there when something goes wrong. Texans don’t always know what to watch out for when looking into solar energy. Some companies promise systems that don’t deliver. Others tell them they qualify for incentives that they end up not being able to use.

With all this in mind, IES Texas Solar has put together a list of red flags that you should watch out for on your solar journey.

Red Flags in the Form of Misleading Information

A question you should be asking is “what do I need to get what I want out of my solar power system?”. This is important because this will determine what you need to have installed. For example, if you want to keep your home running during a power outage then only installing solar panels won’t do the job. You will need both solar panels and backup batteries. Whoever you are working with should be able to tell you this.

Questions like this are vital. This is because some solar companies simply install a cookie-cutter type of system with little regard for the customers needs. Some fit as many solar panels on your roof as possible with no regard for the efficiency of the system. This is often a big red flag in the solar industry.

If a solar company says you won’t need backup batteries or a backup generator, it’s okay to be skeptical. In fact, if your goal is to keep your power on during an outage, then your quote is going to need to include an Enphase or Storz backup battery system and/or a generator. Be sure that you get a quote from IES Texas Solar before you choose a solar company. This is especially important when that company feels like they are overpromising on a system that ends up under delivering.

Red Flags in Engineering or Math Problems

The engineer that is designing your system should be looking at the loads that are used or situated on the solar panels. This is something that should not just be put into the design elements. You need to receive a full breakdown of how and why this type of load is being used by your solar power system. If not, then this could cause issues down the road, such as your system not being as efficient as they said it would be or that it produces less power than you were promised it would.

Red Flags With Warranty Issues

Issues with warranties are one of the largest red flags to be on the look out for. The warranty that comes with your solar power system is one of the most important parts of your solar journey. A good, solid, reliable warranty is long lasting and is something that you should be able to count on. In the solar industry, many companies emerge that install solar power systems only to go under a few short years after being in business. This leaves customers that put their trust in the warranty they were given with no one to turn to when something goes wrong. When you choose a solar company to install your system, they need to give you a long lasting warranty that you can depend on.

IES Texas Solar has the longest lasting warranty in the business. It’s so long lasting that, in fact, it’s outlasted just about every other solar power provider in the business. With IES Texas Solar, you get a warranty that you can depend on whenever you need it. IES Texas Solar has been helping Texas with energy solutions since 1973. Half a century of experience just can’t be beat.

Incentives That you Don’t end up Qualifying for

The incentives Texans get from solar power systems are fantastic. However, it’s important to know what you do and don’t qualify for. A big red flag to watch out for is an inaccurate incentive. Some solar providers may tell you that you qualify for special incentives that you don’t qualify for. This is one of the reasons that it’s so important to get a second opinion on your quote.

The experts at IES Texas Solar have the knowledge, experience, and integrity needed to point out the incentives that you do and don’t qualify for. If you’ve been promised that you qualify for an incentive for going solar, don’t settle on it until you’ve had the chance to get a second opinion from the real experts at IES Texas Solar.

Inaccurate Modeling for Production Analysis

Another red flag to watch out for is that some companies inaccurately model systems. They will draw up a system that has a much higher production value that just isn’t realistic. This results in the system being installed and not producing the power that was promised. These designs are drawn in such a way that it will provide the customer with a certain amount of power, but will generate less than what they were told.

When IES Texas Solar designs a solar power system, you get exactly what you are promised. Our PV design engineers don’t take shortcuts. They design systems more than live up to what you were promised.

They Leave you on Your own When Dealing With the Paperwork for Utility Companies, HOAs, and More

IES Texas Solar takes care of all the paperwork involved in getting your system installed. You can rest easy knowing that we’re handling the trouble of getting permits and approvals wherever they are needed.

This is especially important when it comes to getting your system exactly what it needs as quickly as possible. Some companies may drag their feet on getting your paperwork done and some may not do it at all. An additional benefit to this is that, rather than having to go through the headache of navigating all the approvals needed from utility companies, the city, HOAs, and more, we take care of it so you don’t have to.
