Surprised by the sudden spells of cold weather? Don’t be. Texans are accustomed to the weather being perfect one day, cold the next day, then way too hot for a while after that. While this sort of unpredictable daily weather seems a bit strange, Texans know better than to be fooled by a couple of days of nice weather.
Recently, there have been days that feel like spring is here before dropping by 40 to 50 degrees overnight. In this article, we’re going to be exploring the ways that the weather has changed over the last several years and what you can do to prepare for those sudden changes.
Texas is Known for it’s Crazy Weather
If there’s one thing that Texas is known for, it’s that the weather can change at the drop of a hat. The weather can be a pleasant and sunny 80 degree day and then change overnight to being rainy and 40 degrees before becoming unbelievably hot and windy. While we know that this is mostly normal for Texas itself, it definitely seems like the temperatures are going to further extremes. Brutal winter storms that cause widespread power outages and sizzling summers spike electricity bills. We definitely see that the weather is changing, but the big question is just how much is it changing by?
The Temperatures are Changing
One thing is for certain: the weather is absolutely changing. According to the National Weather Service, the temperature in March has been increasingly low compared to where it was 5 years ago in 2018. For the DFW area, the average temperature in March of 2018 was 63.3 degrees. Fast forward to 2022, and the average temperature dropped to 58.5 degrees.
While the temperature changing so much over the years is an issue, the extreme and sudden changes in the weather are also a point of concern. Sudden dips and spikes in the temperatures and the storms that come with them cause problems. When March arrived, Central Texas experienced instances of single days with beautiful weather that were immediately followed by drops of around 40 to 50 degrees. Some parts of Texas even had ice storms in March. While Texans are used to the weather changing, it appears to be doing this more rapidly.
When it comes to changes in the weather, Texas’ electrical infrastructure seems to still be suffering. High heat can cause power lines to droop and break. Sudden drops in temperature and stormy weather causes trees to fall and damage power lines. Flash floods cause local power outages. While Texans know that these things happen, it’s clear that being prepared and adapting to the weather is a priority.
