Be Prepared for Incoming Extreme Winter Weather

Be Prepared for Incoming Extreme Winter Weather

Date: January 30, 2023

A winter cold snap is projected to happen for your area.

Winter storms are what the National Weather Service calls “deceptive killers” in that many deaths are indirectly related to the storm. Icy roads, the disruption of medical and emergency services, and the stopping of supply flows create hazardous situations for Texans. It is important that you know what to do and how to prepare for extreme winter weather conditions.

We strongly advise that you take the following precautions:

  1. Stock up on food, water, and medical supplies
  • Water and canned beverages
  • Non-perishable foods like canned fruits, vegetables, soups, and peanut butter. Power bars, mixed nuts, and other foods that do not require cooking are also necessary.
  • A full first-aid kit
  • Prescription medications
  • Food and water for pets

  1. Stock up on supplies to stay warm
  • Blankets
  • Gloves, winter hats, and other warm clothes
  • Hand Warmers
  • Firewood if applicable

  1. Gather other supplies
  • Batteries
  • Flashlights and electric lanterns
  • Shovel
  • Ice melt for your driveway and sidewalks

You Should Also do the Following Before and During a Winter Outage:

-Have a plan for your family to follow in case of an emergency or evacuation

-Do not leave your home unless you have to. Traffic accidents due to icy roads are a big risk in Texas. If you must travel somewhere, let someone know where you are going and when you will get there.

-Before and during the outage (there may be brief instances of power during rolling blackouts), charge your cell phones when you have the chance and only use them when necessary (calling family members, checking weather conditions).

-Allow all faucets to drip in order to avoid burst pipes.

-Check for boil water notices before using tap water for drinking or bathing.

-Check to make sure that fireplaces are functional and the hatch is open.

-Check doors and windows for openings and block them with towels or extra clothes. This will help your home retain heat.

DO NOT heat your home using your stove or other appliances fueled by fossil fuels

-Watch for signs of hypothermia and frostbite and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms are present.
